Description of the most important Nicaraguan
Volcanoes
Volcano Cosiguina (859 mts)
For the Mayan people it was an important orientation symbol
on their pilgrimage through Central America. Originally, it
reached to more than 3000 meters. On 23 January 1835, it lost
more than two-thirds of its height because of an eruption
that was heard as far away as Mexico and the island of Jamaica.
From the Floss forum natural outlook, you can see the leafy
forests, the crystal clear waters of the Pacific, and an extensive
part of the cliff-strewn coast.
Volcan Telica (1061 mts)
The volcano has erupted more than 50 times during the past
century -making it our most active volcano. The principal
crater is more than 600 meters deep. Exploration by foot will
uncover rare and precious flora.
Volcano Cerro Negro (700 mts)
Formed less than 150 years ago, it is one of the youngest
volcanoes on the planet. There are five craters-the two latest
created during an eruption in August 1999. Experts predict
more eruptions, but with plenty of warning.
Volcano Mombacho (1344 mts)
A green cloak set in a sea of deforested land covers this
volcano, near Granada. The island, of great interest to biologists,
provides a unique refuge for the flora and fauna of Nicaragua.
The climate is that of a perfectly wonderful foggy, tropical
forest.
Volcano Masaya (686 mts)
Masaya is the only volcano in Central America that has a permanent
lake of magma in its crater. The rocks are continuously melting
and producing smoke columns that reach to the sky. This magnificent
site is only 35 kilometers from the capital Managua.
