Granada, located 46 km south of Managua, was founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1524. It sits beside the magnificent Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca.) Granada is considered the oldest city on firm land founded by the Spanish in the Americas. It's architecture, unique location and people combine to make it the jewel of Central America.

Granada City Tour

Visit the main plaza with the Cathedral and Episcopal Palace, the central park and public colonial buildings. At the Plaza of Independence, we find the
remarkably restored Casa de los Tres Mundo, and then we walk to the historic Church of San Francisco-site of the pulpit from where the friar and historian Bartolomé de Las Casas preached. Here we also view the most important collection of indigenous art found on the island of Zapatera. The Tour finishes with a horsedrawn coach ride to the historic port. Half day.

Volcán Mombacho

Early in the morning we start with an eco-mobil up to the cloud covered forest of Mombacho Volcano. Between Bromelias and orchids, the wind accompanies us with the music of the chicharras, crickets and green parrots. We'll make memories of the countless images that the flora and fauna of this dormant treasure offer. Half day.

After breakfast we visit a group of small enchanting towns near Granada. Our first stops are in Diria y Diriomo-with their well-tended gardens, and white houses. At miday we will be in Catarina-the majestic artist's colony along the crater above Laguna Apoyo. During lunch you will enjoy the breathtaking view across and down into the lagoon. Then we visit the artisans in Catarina and San Juan del Oriente-also known as San Juan de
los Platos. We can view carefully designed and crafted bamboo and ceramic works of art. Less than ten minutes away, we visit Niquinohomo-the birthplace of the Nicaraguan hero Augusto Cesar Sandino. In the afternoon we return to the Hotel in Granada. Full day.
