León, located about 90 km. Northwest of Managua, was, for many years, the main political, military, cultural, and religious center of Nicaragua. The Spanish influence of its colonial heritage is still visible in its streets, buildings and monuments. The Metropolitan Cathedral is considered by many to be the most impressive colonial monument in all Central America-due to its grand construction, arches, altars, and collection of statuettes that reveal the development of religious art from the mid-1700s. Its oil paintings of sacred images are famous and under one of its arches, the remains of some of the most influential men, governors, and historians of Nicaragua lie buried. The remains of the notable Nicaraguan poet, Rubén Darío, prince of the Castilian language, lie buried at the foot of the statue of Saint Paul Hoteles Tours.

Tours

LEÓN CITY TOUR

Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Main Plaza. From there we go to the childhood house of Ruben Dario-the acknowledged prince of Castilian poetry. The Museum of Legends is located in the Garrison Veinte Uno, formerly used by the Somoza National Guards. Here we find the Monument of the Combatiente Desconocido (or Unknown Warrior.) The tour finishes with a visit to the very nicely decorated church of San Juan Bautista in the Indian sububurb Subtiava. Half day.

FLOR DE CAÑA TOUR

Discover many of the secrets of the best rum of the world! Learn about Flor de Caña's natural ageing and production processes that yield one of Nicaragua's national treats. Half day.

LEÓN VIEJO

Visit to the rest of the Leon Viejo-or old Leon, founded in 1524. Today it is recognized by UNESCO as an heritage of the humanity. Here you
see the original form used by the Spanish to plan and construct colonial towns. Last year, an archaeologist found the body of town founder Hernández de Córdoba. He was decapitated on the main Plaza of Leon Viejo and his body lost for centuries. Half day.

"BOILER" OF SAN JACINTO

Near Telica Volcano, about 25 miles from Leon, we encounter the funnel of San Jacinto, a source of water heated by volcanic action. The water boils and mixes with the pure earth to form mud in a permanent state of bubbling and being tossed into the air. The nearby microcraters provide a show with steamy gas emissions. Half day.

VOLCÁN COSIGÜINA TRAIL

Early in the morning we start towards the Golf of Fonseca. Once there, we leave the Jeeps and walk to the top of the large crater. Living within the crater are rare species of wildlife. The Red Parrots are one of the most intriguing species we find. After a picnic, we journey back down and bathe in the Pacific Ocean. Full day.

VOLCÁN CERRO NEGRO TRAIL

Early in the morning depart in comfortable double-cabin, FWD vehicles and, later, journey on foot to the peak. From the vehicle we view the black lava fields and, later, are awed by Nature's paintings in yellow, red, green, black, and every color in between. All of the color is produced by the constant
escape of sulfuric gases. Walking through the smoke, we come to a crest that gives us a view once thought limited to the imagination. Visit to Asososca Lagoon. Full day.
